BERLIN lies in a low range of hills between the Nashua and the Assabet River Valleys.
Incorporated in 1812, the town was a residential and agricultural community, growing mixed
hay grains and raising cattle. For a period after the Civil War, Berlin was home to a large shoe
factory, and shoe manufacturing and lumbering provided non-agrarian jobs. The town soon
moved into specialty market gardening, sending 41,000 bunches of asparagus to market in
1885, growing hops and raising chickens. By 1940, 83,600 dozen eggs were produced annually
by the poultry farmers of  Berlin. Today Berlin is a pleasing mix of past and present.
It continues to embrace its tradition as it cautiously sets in
motion plans for its future.

PROPOSED VETERANS PLAQUE
There is a list of Berlin Veterans posted outside the Town Clerks Office.
If you or anyone you know is not included on this list please have them submit a copy of their DD-214 showing entrance
into the military from Berlin.  If they need help obtaining the DD-214 any veterans agent will help obtain that document.
A copy of the DD-214 can be sent to the Town Clerk of Berlin.  The anticipated deadline is March 1, 2011.

2012 - BERLIN'S BICENTENNIAL
March 11, 1812 to 2012 – Berlin’s 200th Birthday.  The Bicentennial Committee has
already begun work on a year-long birthday celebration.  We are planning
events that
will encompass all age groups and revolve around present Town-wide activities:
Olde Home Day, Christmas in Berlin, Fishing Derby, Fireman’s Muster, Historical Society programs plus
games, a parade, military reenactments, fireworks, a bonfire, a grand ball, classic car parade, banners,
time capsule, memorabilia and much more.  It’s an ambitious undertaking and we will be updating you
time and again on what's needed, what you can contribute, and an occasional photo to help bring
back memories of other special moments in the Town's History.

Can You Recognize Anyone ??
Help the Committee to put a name to every face.
If you recognize someone let the committee know by e-mailing them at:
berlin200th@townofberlin.com

At the present, we are looking for volunteers to donate their time and talent.
We will be compiling a special-edition Bicentennial Cookbook.
So if you have recipes that you would like to submit, especially
ones with a “Berlin history” please send or email them to
berlin200th@townofberlin.com

Better yet if they come with a story or
even a picture of the original cook.

* We are also collecting early pictures of houses,
road scenes, or people. Either you can scan the photos
or we would be happy to do so for you.

If you would like more information please email,
contact any Committee member, or check the
Town Website for updates.

Let’s make Berlin’s 200th Birthday a year
to remember (until the 250th that is)!!.

Respectfully submitted,
Eloise Salls, Ch.; Dennis Fearebay
Marsha Johnston; Linda Thomasino, Secretary
